LG brings new 3D smartphone

DESCRIPTION:

MIYOUNG KIM Reuters SEOUL: LG on Thursday introduced the Optimus 3D smartphone in South Korea and hopes to sell 1.7 million units this year. The phone runs on Android platform and uses Texas Instruments' OMAP mobile processors. It will be available through South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom.

LG is betting the 3D smartphone will help it expand into the portable gaming hardware market, which is dominated by the likes of Japan's Nintendo and Sony.
The Optimus 3D, which has a 4.3-inch display and two cameras, comes with preloaded 3D games made by mobile video game specialist Gameloft SA. In the second half, LG's new product lineup will include LTE (longterm evolution) phones and smartphones with high definition displays, Park Jongseok, head of LG's handset division, said.

LG, the world's No.3 handset maker, cut its 2011 smartphone and handset targets as its present Optimus series has failed to stop the success of iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S. The firm declined to predict when the loss-making divi sion will make a turnaround from four quarterly losses.
“Our overall performance is gradually improving...but it's difficult to give a precise prediction when our business will turn around due to a fast changing external market environment,“ Park said.

APPLE plans to launch its next-generation iPhone

DESCRIPTION:

APPLE plans to launch its next-generation iPhone during the third quarter of the year, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
The newspaper, citing “people familiar with the situation,” said Apple has placed orders for key components to used in the new version of the iPhone and that it would be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4. Apple released the iPhone 4 in June 2010. “Apple’s sales estimates of the new iPhone is quite aggressive,” the Journal quoted a source at one of Apple’s suppliers as saying.
“(Apple) told us to prepare to help the company meet its goal of 25 million units by the end of the year,” the source said. “The initial production volume will be a few million units,” the source said, adding the supplier had been told to ship components to Apple’s Taiwan-based assembler Hon Hai in August.
Apple declined to comment on the Journal report.
Analysts have been predicting that Apple would begin production of a new iPhone in August and introduce it in September or October.

charity goes mobile for teens

DESCRIPTION:

MS NANCY Lublin was sitting in her office in Manhattan one evening last December when she noticed her staff outside giving one another high fives, pumping their fists and generally engaged in raucous celebration.Never one to miss a party, Ms Lublin stepped outside to learn that minutes earlier, the staff had sent a simple text message to 500 teenagers -“Santa Cause says run a food drive in ur community 4 Tackle Hunger“ -an annual food collection that benefits the network of local food pantries affiliated with Feeding America.
The messages went to teenagers who were more or less “defunct,“ meaning that her organisation, Do Something, had not heard from them in some time. For this appeal via text, some 20 per cent returned to the fold in nine minutes. “It was nuts,“ Ms Lublin said.
Right then and there, she decided Do Something, a national nonprofit group that works to involve teenagers in civic activities, had to go mobile. No longer could it rely on its web site to motivate young people to take part in social activism.
Instead, it would rely on mobile technology in the hopes of substantially increasing its reach and impact.

“I want us to be the AARP for the 13to 18year-old set,“ she said recently.
The goal is to use mobile technology to sign up 3.8 million members by 2014, up from 1.2 million in 2010 who were involved in at least one of the more than 50 “campaigns“ Do Something runs each year.
Recently, for instance, teenagers ran drives that collected roughly two million books that are being donated to public schools in New Orleans.

“It has to be things that don't require money, an adult or a car,“ Ms Lublin said.
Teenagers become members by completing a project suggested by Do Something or one they have created themselves and uploading photos or other evidence of their efforts to the organisation's web site. “Teens receive, on average, over 3,300 texts a month, and their phones are part of their social tissue,“ said Mr Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn and a new member of Do Something's board.
“I'm convinced this is the best way to move teen philanthropic action to a new level in terms of scale and effectiveness.“
Many nonprofit groups are testing ways of using mobile technology to advance their mission. In the developing world, organisations have used it in hopes of improving health care, agriculture and finance.
Do Something does not raise money from its members -it does not even collect information on the sex of its members -and Ms Lublin insists it will never sell its membership list the way that charities sell the names and addresses they have collected for directmail solicitation to one another. “Never, never, never,“ Ms. Lublin said. “It makes my skin crawl.“

iphone4G review

DESCRIPTION:

People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With just a tap, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 or to the new iPod touch over Wi-Fi. And it works right out of the box. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.

Two cameras,
two views.

iPhone 4 has two cameras: One on the front, which focuses on you. And one on the back, which focuses on everything else. FaceTime lets you switch back and forth between them at any time during a video call. All you have to do is tap a button.

iPhone 4 introduces a whole new way of multitasking. Now you can run your favorite third-party apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.1 This smarter approach to multitasking is available only in iOS 4.

Shoot your own movies in high definition. Capture impressive video even in low-light settings, thanks to the advanced backside illumination sensor and built-in LED light. Then edit and create your own mini-masterpiece right on iPhone 4 using the iMovie app — with Apple-designed themes, titles, and transitions. It’s available on the App Store for $4.99.

Take beautiful, detailed photos using the 5-megapixel camera with built-in LED flash. The advanced backside illumination sensor captures great pictures even in low light. And the front-facing camera makes it easy to take self-portraits.
