The Sony-Ericsson Vivaz Pro's operation is smooth, the fast processor and the structured setup make for a positive contribution. It is always a bit tricky to judge electronic devices in detail right away, but for a first impression or test this is indeed the impression that we got. The Vivaz Pro's operating system is Symbian S60 and seems to be a good combination with the device.

Besides the good first impression that this Sony-Ericsson smartphone left us with, the definite advantage seems to be the extra QWERTY keyboard. Ideal for maintaining social networks or just sending ‘old-fashioned' email. Sony Ericsson xperia x10

The X10 represents the first Sony Ericsson phone with Google's operating system, and its launch took quite a while, mostly due to the vast UI-related modifications the company made. Unlike other manufacturers' Android interfaces, Sony Ericsson's focuses on multimedia content and Internet communication. It's unsurprising, given the size of its display, which covers almost the entire front of the handset (119x63x13 mm) and it's a comfortable fit for a large palm.

A 4-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 480 x 854 and 64K color support brings good image quality and features. Android OS in version 1.6 comes with a 64K color limit, but you can upgrade Xperia X10 to the latest version of the operating system, 2.1, which supports 16M colors.

The handset comes with 1 GB of internal memory and an 8 GB microSD memory card, which is enough for storing plenty of apps and files. For users who need more memory space, microSD cards of up to 16 GB are supported.The Xperia X10 supports all 2G and 3G bands, therefore can be used easily around the world, without thinking about mobile network operator's technology, which is something frequent travelers might appreciate. The phone also supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1.

Sony Ericsson used the adaptability of Android OS and created the Timescape/Mediascape user interface for its first handset with this platform. The UI focuses on Internet communication and multimedia content stored in the phone. Timescape is an application that manages many types of communication: calls, SMS text messages, emails, and Facebook and Twitter, among other social media outlets. It can also be set as the home screen.

All the messages are lined up in reverse chronological order when Timescape is activated, and show a photo of the person who you communicated with. They can be filtered according to them type of communication and every one of them, along with the photo, has an icon with the infinity sign that shows a complete communication history with that person.

Mediascape functions similarly, but with photos, videos and MP3s organized in reverse chronological order; files most recently used or added are first on the list.

The handset includes an application suite for synchronization of various segments of MS Outlook with the handset (email, contacts, tasks, calendar). The most interesting among them is Moxier Mail, used for Exchange Server email access that doesn't need server-side extensions since it uses the server's Outlook Web Access interface.

The standard email app can be used for POP3 and IMAP email accounts, as well as for Gmail.

The X10 features an 8 megapixel camera with an LED flash. The camera software has a large feature set reminiscent of Sony Cyber-shot cameras. In addition to excellent face detection, people in photos can be tagged (similar to Facebook), which can prove to be useful for subsequent sorting in Mediascape.

Daylight photo quality is above average for this class of handset, exceptionally sharp and with vivid colors. Photos taken in darker settings, however, have much duller colors and a large number of artifacts. Some Sony Ericsson phones have much better image quality in this type of setting; it's a shame that the X10's camera doesn't. Furthermore, the LED flash must be manually activated, which is another downside.

The Xperia X10 features a 1500 mAh Li-Poly battery, sufficient for about two days of normal usage. Heavy usage of Wi-Fi, multimedia and GPS functionalities reduces the autonomy drastically; the handset, under those conditions, will have to be recharged daily. The reduced battery life is probably due to the large screen; the good news is that, just like other Sony Ericsson phones, ordinary calls have little impact on battery life.

  

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini

The X10 is a primarily plastic phone, which may turn some people off from the phone itself, but I can assure you that the build quality is very robust, with only minor squeaking when the phone is twisted to an extreme point (which we won’t do it in our daily life anyway). The large, 4 inch screen is a joy to use with a nice color reproduction and sensitive capacitive technology. There is a drawback in having this big – the system can lag a bit at certain times when one accesses certain programs. Its more the problem of the system needs to render the program on screen.

Software on the phone is still using version 1.6 of the Android OS, where other competitors are already using higher versions. However Sony Ericsson announced recently that there will be an update programme for the X10 to receive version 2.1 of the OS which adds several new features and increases response time.

Back to the phone, it has a very minimalistic look. On the top are the power button, audio jack and microUSB sitting behind a plastic door. While it is nice to have the lines undisturbed, I feel the microUSB port is better served out in the open as the door has a chance to be broken off from the phone. On the right side you will see the volume buttons and the camera shutter buttons. Under the screen on the front, sits three buttons for back, home and menu (but it is not labeled as such so users can be confused). An 8.1 megapixel camera with an LED flash adorns the back of the phone, completing the simple design of the X10.

Using the X10 is very intuitive, but it comes with some caveats. The capacitive screen is very responsive, but unfortunately there are no Multi-touch capabilities on the phone. Thanks to the large screen however multimedia (in the form of videos) looks very nice. Even photos taken with the phone are magnificent; thanks to the long experience Sony Ericsson gathered from their Cybershot phone line.

Timescape and Mediascape are two apps that puts this phone apart from the other Android phone in the market. Timescape is Sony Ericsson’s software that caters to the social networking craze, with built-in twitter and Facebook aggregator that displays your friend’s updates in a very nice timeline while Mediascape is the phone’s multimedia centre for music and video playback.

For those who are looking for an alternative for the iPhone, the X10 is a valid contender – if you can live with the slight lag on day-to-day basis.

Nokia N86 8MP

The N86 8MP features a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic pictures and variable aperture to help you get better pictures in super-bright or low-light environments. There is also a dual-LED flash and the camera phone claims to have a fast mechanical shutter that should reduce motion blur.

Photos can be geotagged, thanks to the integrated GPS, and of course, you can upload them to Nokia's Ovi service or Flickr. The N86 also has video-out capabilities, so you can show off your pictures on a larger TV or computer screen. There's 8GB of onboard memory for storing photos and other media files, which can be expanded through the microSD slot (accepts up to 16GB cards).

Other highlights of the Symbian S60 phone include a 2.6-inch, scratch-resistant OLED display, stereo Bluetooth support, Wi-Fi, e-mail support, an FM transmitter, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Nokia N86 8MP is expected to ship in Q2 for around 375 Euros (around $472 U.S.).

Nokia E75

The Nokia E75 offers a compact design while managing to fit in a full QWERTY keyboard. The smartphone ships with Nokia's new messaging client, which features push delivery for all accounts. Other highlights include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3.2-megapixel camera.

The Nokia E75 is a nice alternative to the current crop of slate QWERTY messaging smartphones, offering a compact design without sacrificing the keyboard or e-mail capabilities. However, without carrier backing, the unlocked phone is a bit expensive.

Nokia N97 Mini

Nokia N97 was one of the most hyped handsets of last year, but for many the final product didn’t live up to expectations. It was bulky, the keyboard could have been better and its software wasn’t as robust as it should have been. Nokia did address the latter with a significant update, but the other criticisms remained. As a result, it’s difficult not to see the N97 Mini as Nokia’s attempt to right some of these past mistakes. As the name suggests the handset is essentially a shrunken version of the original with a few features removed, reduced or revised, but thankfully Nokia has managed to do this without really affecting the core DNA of the phone. 

When you first pick up the phone the difference in size really is very noticeable. Whereas the N97 was a bit of a tank, the Mini is more of a hot hatch. It’s considerably narrower and thinner and as a result is not only much more pocket-friendly, but also much better looking too. It’s still a tad heavy, tipping the scales at 138g, but if anything this only helps add to its robust feel, which gives you confidence that it’ll stand up to its fair share of knocks and scrapes. 

Naturally, the smaller form factor means the screen has had to be reduced in size. It has been shrunk from 3.5 to 3.2in, although the resolution remains untouched at 640 x 360. Unfortunately Nokia has stuck with a resistive touchscreen rather than going for the capacitive display that we’ve seen on the recent X6. But while the Mini’s screen isn’t quite as responsive to finger presses as the one on the x6. it’s certainly not bad by resistive standards. What's more, it’s nice and bright and text and graphics look slightly sharper than they do on the original N97 as the pixels are now packed closer together. 

Nokia X6 8GB

Nokia N900

The Nokia N900 offers a powerful mobile Web browser, plenty of storage, a 5-megapixel camera, and an ultrasharp display. It's also fast, multitasks well, and has excellent call quality. Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, and GPS are all onboard.

While it has yet to reach its full potential, the Nokia N900 is a powerful mobile device with excellent browsing capabilities and vast customization options. However, its unintuitive interface and other limitations make this a smartphone for tech enthusiasts and early adopters only.

Nokia X6V

Nokia has come up with this special V edition of its X6 handset. It comes with 25 free music downloads of your choice from the Nokia Music Store, Bluetooth headphones  (worth about £50) and V Festival and Shazam apps pre-loaded.

A snazzy and compact smartphone, the highly responsive 3.2-inch touchscreen on the X6 really shines. But it's not just a pretty face - there's a wealth of features, such as the five megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual LED flash.

Micromax X600

Micromax has announced a similar dual SIM handset Micromax named asX600. Using its Gravity sensors, you can effortlessly change the SIM just by rotating the phone.
Micromax X600 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen interface, Music Player, Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS and various social networking apps like Facebook, Nimbuzz etc. The price of the handset is estimated to be close to Rs. 4500.
The handset weighs just 110 grams and has a dimension of 113 x 56 x 12.7 mm. It`s 3.2 inch wide touchscreen should be sufficient for you to watch videos or surf the internet. The phone also comes with a decent 2MP camera as well just like GC700. Moreover, itsMotion Sensor is sure to assist gamers in some of the games.
For connectivity purposes, the phone has GPRS, EDGE, WAP and MMS options. The handset also has an inbuilt Opera browserto ease your task of surfing the internet.
Micromax X600 comes with an expandable memory limit up to 4GB. As far as battery power is concerned, it can offer talktime up to 5 hours and standby time up to 8 days.

Micromax Q5fb

Micromax Q5fb is a sleek dual SIM QWERTY handset, which brags of its multimedia capabilities, powered by Yamaha. The handset also emphasizes on socialnetworking services as it comes preloaded with Facebook app that can be triggered by a specific key. It has Nimbuzz as the instant messenger and Opera Mini as the default browser. The stunning handset featuring a 2MP camera is available at a price tag of Rs.4,000.

With Micromax Q5fb, being in touch with your family and friends is always feasible. Its multi format music player with breathtaking sound quality gives a great musical touch to the handset. Given the price tag of Rs. 4,000, the 2MP camera is very much worth it.

The handset supports all basic Micromax Q5fb runs on Li-Ion 1000 mAh battery and claims to provide up to 5 hours of talktime and around 180 hours of standby time. Moreover, it comes with an internal memory of 15MB with an option of expanding it to 8GB via microSD card.

Micromax Q7 EzPad

Micromax is once again into the news with its latest EZPAD series handset named as Q7. Micromax Q7 is a dual SIM QWERTY device, which basically emphasizes on music, powered by Yamaha. Apart from this, it has a 2MP camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with A2DP. Q7 is Facebook ready phone with integrated Nimbuzz multi messenger, preloaded opera browser, Stereo FM Radio and preloaded games. The price of Q7 is not announced officially but it is expected to be around Rs. 5,000.

The phone will be available in 2 colors of black and silver. There should not be any problem in its connectivity as it has EDGE and WAP enabled. As it has preloaded Opera Mini, it lets you browse almost anything from mobile. Even if there is no dedicated Orkut application, access orkut from Opera Mini. The phone also features an emphatic78MB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 4GB.
